BLACK BEAR HUNTING

Alaska Black Bear Hunting

Coastal Alaskan Black Bear Hunting

Alaska happens to offer superb black bear hunting and hunting for extremely large coastal black bear is becoming more and more popular.  Most people think of Southeast Alaska and Prince of Wales Island in particular when it comes to especially large black bears, but the Gulf Coast of Alaska and Prince William Sound also offer hunting opportunities for incredibly big Alaskan black bear.  In addition, the rare “Glacier Bear” (silver color-phase) can sometimes be seen and killed there.

I offer true wilderness hunting for large coastal Alaskan black bear.  I specifically hunt those bears near College Fiord and Harriman Fiord, in western Prince William Sound.  These are remote fly-in hunts and all hunting is done on foot.  I do not bait bears.  The coastal black bears within my coastal region of Alaska are extremely large and there’s a high percentage of old males in the population.  Plus, I sometimes encounter rare “Glacier Bears”, which are the silver color-phase of black bear.  Nevertheless, extraordinary black bear hunting is available in my area and the chance to kill a true monster is very good indeed.  Success rate is generally 100% on black bears that measure between 6 and 7 feet.

As mentioned, access is via highly modified Piper PA-18 aircraft and all hunting is done on foot.  The hunting technique is traditional spot-and-stalk and a hunter can expect to see 10-15 black bears per day.  Physical difficulty is rated as moderate and in truth, it’s physically easy hunting.  Camps are situated where the plane drops us off and we hunt from that stationary camp location.  However, my hunting camps are the traditional Alaskan spike camp setup.  I do not offer lodge-type accommodations.

I offer one-on-one, two-on-one, three-on-one and four-on-one hunts in pursuit of coastal Alaskan black bear.  During spring hunts, wolf and large Alaskan coyote are available no charge.  During fall hunts, wolf, wolverine and Alaskan coyote are available no charge.  Pelt quality is prime, whether hunting in the spring or fall.  To assure superb trophy availability and trophy quality into the future, the bag-limit on black bear is one bear per person.  I do not offer multiple bears per person hunts.

Black bears are not especially hard to kill.  So, any caliber from .25-06 Remington and larger is plenty adequate.  In fact, the venerable .30-06 Springfield is generally considered the best all-around caliber for Alaskan big game hunting.  So, if you have an “aught six” at home and you want to use it during your Alaskan hunt, by all means, bring it!

In closing, if you have questions regarding my premier coastal Alaskan black bear hunts, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I’d love to answer your questions and talk about bear hunting.  Bear hunting is one of my favorite activities and I always offer a quality educational experience for my hunters.  So if you want to talk bear hunting, please get in touch with me!  Until then, best wishes and as always, may God bless.
