MNT GOAT HUNTING

Goat Hunting Alaska/Moose Hunting Alaska

Goat Hunts Alaska/Black Bear Hunting Alaska/Combo Packages

My mountain goat hunts are conducted near Prince William Sound and into the Chugach Mountain Range.  There are exceptional World-Class trophy mountain goats within my 12,800 square mile Guide Use Area.  Goats with horns in excess of 54 Boone & Crockett inches are available.  The possibility of a New World Record Pope & Young mountain goat is reasonable.  High scoring record book goats have come from these regions during the past 70 years.

During fall mountain goat hunts, exceptional trophy black bear, wolf and wolverine are available no extra charge.  Mountain goat hunts are ten (10) days duration; all-inclusive from Anchorage, Alaska.  This includes ground transportation and air charter to/from the field.  One-on-one and two-on-one (hunter:guide ratio) hunts are available.
Access to various camp locations is by highly modified Piper PA-18 aircraft and all hunting is done on foot.  THESE ARE NOT BACKPACK HUNTS!  To the contrary, camps are situated with or very close to mountain goats.  Therefore, we are NOT carrying a camp on our backs, but instead, we view goats right from where the plane deposited us.  Then, when goats are in an approachable position whereas we can safely ascend the mountain, kill a trophy goat, salvage the meat, cape and horns, and safely descend the mountain  --  all in one day  --  we commence a stalk right from our stationary camp location.  Basically speaking, we only climb the mountain once during the course of a ten-day goat hunt.

I prefer to hunt mountain goats during late fall and early winter, when pelts are prime.  Since pelt quality is so important and much desired, and since pelt quality makes up a large portion of the goat trophy, it’s better to hunt during times when pelt condition is at its very best.  So, I prefer to hunt goats during late fall and early winter.  An added benefit of that is the positioning of animals; goats tend to drop in elevation with the advance of winter and this makes it much easier to climb the mountain, kill a trophy goat and then come back down the mountain in just one day.

Tags are allocated two ways: archery tags are available over-the-counter (OTC) and rifle tags are issued through a lottery permit system.  Archery mountain goat hunting is relatively simple, because goats are easy to approach and they’re not prone to running when in close proximity to humans.  Therefore, mountain goats are very conducive to archery hunting.  With that being said, rifle hunting is especially easy.

Camps consist of an expedition-quality mountaineering tent per each person, for privacy and space.  Camps are comfortable, warm and dry.  Each person is outfitted with all the camp amenities needed for safe and comfortable living within the Alaskan wilderness.  The daily food menu is based on a high energy expedition diet that I’ve personally developed during the past 50 years.  There’s plenty of food and beverages and you WILL NOT go hungry.

Because of their tenacity and metabolism, and their remarkable ability to resist kinetic shock delivered by a bullet, North American mountain goats can be exceedingly hard to kill with a rifle.  And since goats tend to be in dangerous terrain and are susceptible to wounding loss, it’s critically important to use a caliber/bullet combination that delivers deep penetration and adequate energy.  Generally, goats need to be anchored where the first shot is fired, or else loss of the goat becomes a real possibility.  Therefore, any caliber from .30-06 Springfield and up is generally required for mountain goat, and heavy-for-caliber cup-and-core type bullets such as Remington Core Lokt, Nosler Partition, Nosler Accubond or Hornaday Interbond are also required.

If you are interested in a one-on-one or two-on-one mountain goat hunt, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to hearing from you and to the possibility of hunting with you in the future.  Until then, best wishes and may God bless.
