September 2019 Dall Sheep Hunt
Tom is a long-retired construction worker. So, he’s in relatively good physical condition for an elderly gentleman. However, my hunts in pursuit of Dall sheep typically aren’t that physically demanding. Tom and I would later find out that that’s not always the case.
Seven days of the hunt were spent observing several large rams, three of which were unusually large and possible Record Book contenders. Finally, on Day Eight, which was the last day of the sheep hunting season, one of the larger rams and two of his companions got into good enough position for a stalk from camp.
Tom and I departed from the tents on yet another wet, snowy, foggy afternoon. The snow squalls were relentless, but occasionally we could peer through the fog and swirling snow mixed with rain, and get a fix on the rams’ position. Everything looked good for an approach.
At 3.00 PM on the final day of hunting season and as we neared the rams’ last known position, I caught glimpse of the rams, feeding just 250 yards away. Tom quickly chambered a cartridge and slithered into shooting position. One shot was all it took to bring down the ram of a lifetime. The next two days were spent packing the ram up the mountain and back to camp, through incessant snow storms. It was physically exhausting.
Tom’s ram won an award at the recent Ovis Convention held in Nevada. What an honor to partake in such a great fair-chase hunt with a fine gentleman friend. I will cherish the memories of that hunt, forever.
